Watgrove, Great Chalfield, Wiltshire: Earthwork Survey Report

Previously unrecorded earthwork features in ‘Watgrove’ field, Great Chalfield, were surveyed by English Heritage (EH) in 2014 as part of the National Archaeological Identification Survey West Wiltshire Pilot Project. Most of the earthworks are connected with medieval and later land-use of the area by Great Chalfield Manor. They include: a complex of small platforms and hollow-ways, possibly the remains of small farmstead; a pillow mound, part of a medieval or post-medieval rabbit warren and relict field boundaries of a variety of dates. The most recent features are a system of post-medieval and later ditches and channels, incorporating a sheep dip. A spread mound close to the former course of the Lenton Brook may, potentially, be an earlier feature, since its size, plan form and location are similar to those of cropmark barrows discovered in the vicinity.
