GV II

House. Probably late C18 with late C19 extension. The walls and stacks are stucco, the walls incised as ashlar, but their material, whether brick or stone rubble, is unknown; slate roof. The main block is square in plan with the front facing south-east. It has a double- depth plan comprising a front and back room either side of the entrance hall and main stair. The left (south-western) rooms have individualend stacks and the right rooms are served by an axial stack between serving back-to-back fireplaces. On the left end and set back a little from the main front is the lower service block which is 2 rooms deep and has an end probably kitchen stack. It looks like a late C19 addition but may be a modernisation of service rooms from that time. Main block is 2 storeys with attics and service block is 2 storeys. Main block has symmetrical 3-window front of 12-pane sashes, those on the ground floor are taller than those on the first. Central doorway contains a 4-panel door, an overlight with glazing bars, panelled reveals and flat-roofed open Doric porch. with fluted mortar columns and moulded timber entablature including a modillion cornice. At the top is a plain parapet over a timber modillion eaves cornice. The roof is hipped each end. The right (north-eastern) and rear (north-western) elevations carry round in the same style, both with 3-window fronts of 12-pane sashes, and the former has 2 dormer windows to the attics. To left of the main front the extension has wholly late C19 fenestration with a ground floor canted bay window containing sashes without glazing bars and a first floor horned 12-pane sash. The roof is hipped. The rear of the extension contains 2 ground floor doors and a first floor horned 12-pane sash. Interior: only limited access available at time of survey but enough to see that much original detail remains including panelled doors and window shutters, chimneypieces and moulded plaster cornices. The stair is original; it has an open string, turned balusters with blocks and flat moulded handrail.
