Description

Album entitled 'Seabord of the United Kingdom: South Western Ports', transferred via British Records Association from H M Customs and Excise, Library Services, Salford. The album contains circa 170 photographs of ports, harbours and coastlines in Dorset, Devon, Cornwall, Scilly Isles, Somerset, Gloucester and Monmouth dating between the 1860s and 1930s. Mostly original albumen prints, predominantly by F Frith but also J Valentine, G W Wilson. There are also a few later poor quality mechanical copies. Unusual items include a very large linen backed 2 part panoramic print of Lyme Regis. Views also show rivers, inland docks, bathing machines, sailing ships, fishing boats, hulks, lighthouses, coastal fortifications and the Severn Bridge at Sharpness. There are some images of buildings not associated with ports.

Copyright has been assumed for all photographs except those taken by Francis Frith and Company, for which permission to reproduce must be sought from the company.
