Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

1. MORFORD STREET 823 The former Tennis Court ST 7465 NE 10/391A

II

2. The Court was built by Richard Scrase in 1777 on a plan provided by the Earl of Pembroke. Besides the Courts at Iiaap.ton Court and in Merton Street, Oxford, it is probably the only surviving pre-C19 Tennis Court in the country.

It is built of stone rubble with quoins of dressed stone, Cornice and parapet.

Concealed tiled roof. Gable ends east and west. The north and south fronts have 8 windows each high up in the wall.

The Court was not used as such after about 1830. It was converted into a brewery in the C19 and still has 2 floors inserted. None of the internal fitments of the Court survive but the exterior is intact.
