BIRTSMORTON CP - SO 73 NE 4/30 Home Farmhouse - II

House. C17, with possible earlier remains, altered 1798 and later.

Timber-framing with brick infill and tile roof. Two storeys. Main range of two bays, framed in four rows of square panels except for the right-hand end which is mainly of brick with one horizontal rail. At the left is a projecting cross-king with jowled principal posts. A timber canted bay window on the ground floor has sashes with glazing bars. Below the tie-beam is a first floor window. The truss has raking struts betwen tie-beam and collar. The gable has a plaster inscription, "1798", which may refer to the date of the bay window. Doorway in right- hand return wall of cross-wing. Chimneys to right of first bay and on right-hand gable. Interior: not accessible at time of survey (June 1986).
