SP98SE SUDBOROUGH MAIN STREET (North side)

3/132 Brewery Cottage and attached dovecote

GV II

Shown on Ordnance Survey map as No.5.

House and dovecote. Dovecote, probably late C17/early C18, has datestone TSM/1777; house is probably late C18 and early and late C19. Dovecote is squared coursed limestone and house is brick, both with slate roofs. House originally 2-unit plan. 2 storeys. 3-window range of C19 casements under shallow brick arches. Central C19 four-panel door under similar head. Brick stacks at ends.

Rear has late C19 extension. Dovecote is attached to left corner of main front and has central C19 casement window under wood lintel. C20 door to left and C19 panelled door to right, both under wood lintels. Similar window in left gable.

Interior of house has early/mid C19 fireplaces in all rooms, room left of entrance probably has open fireplace, now blocked. Interior of dovecote has nesting boxes visible on 2 walls. The dovecote originally served Brooke House (q.v.) and the datestone probably refers to Brewery Cottage which, it is said, was built by the owners of Brooke House for an unmarried relative.
