COLTON FINSTHWAITE SD 38 NE 7/43 Finsthwaite House 25.3.70 II

House. Late C17 or early C18 with alterations and front range of 1790. Stone rubble with dressed stone dressings and slate M-shaped roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays; the central bay breaks forward. Top cornice and parapet; quoins. Windows have dressed surrounds with incised numbers and some long stones, indicating originally roughcast; central 1st floor window has frieze and consoled cornice, all are sashed with glazing bars. Entrance has Tuscan porch with paired columns and blocking course, early C19 decorative cast iron balcony removed (1986); round-headed recess with angle pilasters, entrance has panelled pilasters, elliptical shell fan and panelled door. Gable-end stacks and cross-axial stack. Rear has 2-storey canted bay; entrance has half-glazed panelled door with diagonal glazing bars; rainwater head has cherub and date 1763. Small extension with bell turret to right angle. Left return has 2 windows with small-paned fixed glazing to attic. Interior has some plasterwork eg. to niches and architraves; one round-headed niche has architrave and shaped shelves.

Dog-leg stair with stick balusters and dog-leg back stair with turned balusters, fluted square newels and moulded handrails. Round panelled arch to rear of house, which has room with large stone fireplace with corbelled lintel and moulded opening and room with some fielded panelling; 1st floor room has stone fireplace with fluted key.
