GOUDHURST CHURCH ROAD TQ 7237-7337 (south side) 15/115 Maypole GV II* House. C15 to C16, altered C18 and early C20. Timber framed and clad with red and blue brick and tile hanging and extended with brick and tile hanging. Plain tiled roofs. Wealden hall house with cross-wing. Two storeys on plinth with projecting and underbuilt wings to left and to right with recessed central bays, the eaves carried on brackets. Hipped roof with stacks to end left, centre right and at end right and rear right. Four wooden and metal casements on first floor, and 3 glazing bar sashes on ground floor. Door of 6 raised and fielded panels to centre right with traceried semi-circular fanlight and open pedimented surround on pilasters with entablature blocks. Canted C20 bay window to right return to gabled return wing, the offset stalls at the end wall of English bond brickwork with sandstone base. Irregular fenestration of wooden casements and glazing bar sashes to rear. Interior: fully framed interior, the main range with 1 bay crown post roof, with tall octagonal moulded central post, knee braced to collar purlin and braced to diagonal struts from rafter to collar. The crown post trusses at either end of hall with attached diminutive half-section crown posts, braced to collar purlin giving effect of arcade responds. All heavily soot black- ened. Cross wing with stop-chamfered beams and splayed scarf points to wall plates. Kitchen range with copper and plate warmer, reportedly similar to C16 examples at Hampton Court, with stone lined cellar below. C18 fittings, including ramped mahogany handrail to top lit stairs, marble fireplaces and wooden columned fireplace with pulvinated frieze. Early C20 fittings, including Art Nouveau fire fittings and mantlepieces.
