TM 26 SE EARL SOHAM CHURCH LANE
3/180 DIAL COTTAGE
II
House. Late C16, with C20 extensions. Timber-framed and rendered with incised panels; thatched roof. 1 storeys. An internal chimney-stack with a plain red brick shaft; 2-cell plan. 2-light C20 plain casement windows; original lobby entry blocked; the present entrance into a small enclosed porch added at the left end. A single-storey C20 lean-to along the whole rear wall. The whole frame is exposed internally: all sills have been raised; substantial, widely-spaced, full height studding; main beams with a wide chamfer and curved stops unusually incised with a cross saltire, joists chamfered with stepped stops; plain timber lintels to 2 ground floor fireplaces. 4 bays, including a chimney-bay: good Tudor brickwork to stack with associated newel stair. The tie-beams to each side of the stack were low, and one has been removed; in the 2-bay room to the right of the stack the open truss has a low collar of deep section instead of a tie-beam. Remains of several original windows: on the rear wall of the upper room to left of the stack of 5-lights, with hollow-chamfer mullions in situ. Roof with clasped purlins, ceiled off at collar level.
