UFFORD CHURCH LANE TM 25 SE (East end) 9/139 16/3/66 The Old Rectory (formerly listed as The Rectory) GV II

House, formerly rectory, C16 or C17 with early C19 and C20 additions and alterations. Timber framed and brick with pargetted and colourwashed render and a thatched roof. Two storeys. Entrance front: projecting C19 bay at right with colourwashed pargetting but no windows. The walling here rises higher than the rest of the house and has a hipped roof. To left of this is the C16 or C17 portion which has to the ground floor at centre a C19 verandah with entrance lobbies at either side and a wooden trellis between supporting the hipped roof. To the rear wall behind the verandah is an early-C19 three-light casement window. To the first floor above this is a further similar window. To left at ground floor level is a 3-light C19 casement and there is a similar window to the jettied first floor which has applied timber planking simulating close studding. Right hand flank: (the early C19 addition) two pairs of French windows above which are panels of imitation timber framing below the two first floor windows, each of 2 lights with louvred shutters. Left hand flank: projecting ground floor extension at right with a hipped slate roof and to the first floor above this a 3-light casement with ogee-heads to the lights. Single-light similar window at right. To left of this is a C19 two-storey addition which has a sash window of 4 x 4 panes to the right. Rear: projecting C19 wing at right with 2 ground floor windows and to its left hand flank a 1/2- glazed door at left with cambered head and a window of 4 x 4 sash panes at right. Two similar windows to the first floor with louvred shutters. To left of this and recessed is the C16/C17 axial range which has a projecting bay window to the ground floor at right having 5 central lights with ogee heads and 2 to the sides. At left of this is a 3-light window with similar ogee heads. To the first floor are three 2-light casements.

Interior: Chestnut beams and posts to the present kitchen with some planted C20 timbers. The sitting room has a pine or chestnut beam but the chimney bressumer is a C15 of C16 beam, perhaps brought from the church rood screen and re-used here. It has an upper arcade of 4-centered arches with complex roll and cavetto moulds below. The first floor corridor shows close studding and a blocked window to one wall. The ceiling heights of the bedrooms have been raised. Winder staircase of pine.
