Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

SX 98 SE LYMPSTONE CHURCH ROAD (south side), Lympstone 5/24 Wall adjoining Southerleigh and - extending east on the south side of Church Road GV II Garden wall. Possibly C16 or later. Red sandstone coursed rubble, with some brick and limestone. Remains of a chamfered plinth which returns at the west end; remains of chamfered coping, with brick upper parts in Flemish bond. East corner with upper courses in limestone. The east perimeter wall enclosing the garden of Southerleigh (q.v.) is later, of brick, with coursed limestone towards the south end. The original function of the sandstone stretch of walling remains uncertain; there are no indications on either side of former abuttments or embrasures. What detailing there is suggests a C16 or C17 date. The wall contributes to an attractive group comprising The Redwing Public House, Southerleigh, Varnes and Shepherds (all q.v.).
