DATCHWORTH WATTON ROAD TL 21 NE (South side) Datchworth Green 3/41 Hopper's Hall 20.10.52 GV II

House. c.1640 with minor additions and alterations. Timber frame on brick base, rendered. Steeply pitched tiled roof. Large 3 cell lobby entry with porch and stair wings. 2 storeys and attics. Original 2 storey entrance porch to right of centre, raised 6 panelled door in architrave with small bracketed hood, first floor 2 light small pane moulded flush frame casement. Hipped roof on porch. All other windows to front are 6 light mullion and transom small pane moulded flush frame casements. Continuous eaves cornice. Large axial stack behind entrance bay is multiform stretcher bond with moulded capping. Similar smaller stack slightly extruded at left end, also original. Right gable end exposed plates and purlins. Rear elevation full height gabled stair wing to rear of entrance bay, a low 1 storey and attic later C17 gabled wing projects to rear of left or service bay, these are linked by a 1 storey C20 flat roofed addition. Scattered small pane flush frame casements and a 2 light gabled dormer to rear. Low gabled bakehouse addition extends from left end. Interior: exposed framing with close studding and tension braces, ogee stop chamfered axial bearers and fireplace lintel. Early C18 open well stair with turned balusters, moulded ramped handrail.
