SHARNBROOK CHURCH LANE SP 9959 18/445 Magniac Mausoleum St Peter's Churchyard - GV II

Mausoleum of 1870, designed by William Burges. Large rectangular memorial in stone and inlaid marble decoration, in free version of Sicilian Romanesque style. Rests on beaded plinth with undulate frieze running below and above main panels, then ogee cornice and flat slab top. Central cartouche in each side, with a cherub in three-quarter relief supporting an ornate scrolled console at each end of the long sides. Various inscriptions to members of the Magniac family of Colworth House. Protected by possibly later hipped red clay tile roof supported on eight wooden bracketed posts with end braces. Set on much larger limestone-edged plinth. J Mordaunt Crook, William Burges and the High Victorian Dream (1981) p153-4, 373, 432.
