9/169 Old Town House and Old Town Cottage adjoining 11/6/58 to North

GV II*

House, divided. Late C16 with C17 alterations and extensions to right; restored to left in C20. Timber framed on ribblestone plinth, red and blue cladding below, rendered infill above to close studding above; tile hung above to right. Plain tiled roofs, hipped to right on main houses; corbelled ridge stack to left of centre. L shaped with gable front extension to right. One storey and attic jettied over ground floor to left under 2 leaded casement eaves dormers. 2 storeys to right with leaded casement in first floor of gable. Irregular C20 fenestration across ground floor, corner window to left and 2 large full storey height windows to right; one 24 squares, one 16 squares, further casement windows under flat hood across re-entrant angle between left and right ranges, and 3 windows across ground floor of right hand wing. Left hand return front (south):- Jettied gable with curved bracing rebuilt in C20, half glazed door to left end under traceried fan- light in moulded surround. Right hand return front (north):- One 10-light project- ing casement window to first floor left under jettied gable with moulded bressumer on end brackets with square cushion and spike pendants. Window with moulded transome and squat scroll brackets supports. Lower wing extending to right at right angles to main house. Wings to rear in centre.

Interior:- Heavy timbers of former jetty on first floor visible inside; much other framing visible.

The house forms an important part of the approach to the Church.
