YATTON C.P. NORTH END (north east side) ST 46 NW 5/180 The Grange - II House, Early C16 hall house with later wing and stair tower, mid C17 wing added to front, later kitchen addition to rear, some C19 and C20 alterations. Rubble, all rendered except for stair tower, pantiled roof with brick gable stacks over wing to left, double Roman tiled roof with some crestings and gable stack to right over main range. Hall in range to right, former screens passage with service wing to left. Wing to left of 2 storeys, now entrance front, has ground floor 3-light casement with ovolo mullions, buttress to each side and C19 door with segmental head to right, C19 3-light casement under eaves. Side of main range to right has C19 2-light casement under eaves, roof pitch extended over stair tower with 2-light casement with ovolo mullions; slightly set back, front wing of mid C17 has ground floor C20 2-light window and door to inner side, at first floor two 2-light casements with ovolo mullions and frame and wooden stanchions, front gable end of wing blank. Left return of wing has very battered wall with owlhole in gable end, later brick stack, wall cut back to right corner. Right return of front wing has C20 2-light casement at ground floor left and door with ovolo-moulded frame and stone lintel, under eaves a C20 2-light casement to left and small 2-light casement with ovolo mullion to right.

Gable end of main range at right return has raised coped verges and stack, 2-pane C20 ground floor window to left side. Rear gable end has 2 C19 2-light casements with splayed stone heads at ground floor, 2 similar smaller casements at first floor, lean-to to left with glazed door and circular oven projection with stone tiled roof. Interior: main room at ground floor has fine framed ceiling 4 x 2 bays, with moulded beams, extending over passage and divided by partition wall, stone newel stair in stair tower. Rear kitchen has bread oven remaining. Room in wing to left has chamfered beams, end fireplace has mantel and surround carved by former occupant of house, early C20 church furnishing carver, cupboard to left and right with strap hinges. Roof not fully visible, front wing has one truss with arched-brace and collar. Early door between main range and front wing, probably original entrance.
