WOOLFARDISWORTHY BLACK DOG SS 80 NW 6/295 Tree Cottage and Well Cottage - - II

2 cottages. Late C18-early C19, both enlarged in C20. Original building is plastered cob on rubble footings; rubble stacks topped with C20 brick; thatched roof. Pair of semi-detached cottages facing south-east. Tree Cottage to left (south-west) was originally a 2-room cottage but a third room added to left (south- west) end circa 1968. Axial stacks on outer ends of original 2 rooms. Well Cottage was originally a 1-room cottage with rear lateral stack but enlarged to 2 rooms in C20. Both 2 storeys. Tree Cottage has regular 3-window front of C20 casements, most with glazing bars and copying earlier style. Originally central door now right of centre since extension and has late C19-early C20 porch with monopitch slate roof. Roof is gable-ended to left and eaves rise at that end over 1968 extension.

Well Cottage has 3-window front of C20 casements without glazing bars. Door at right end to C20 extension has C20 gabled and slate-roofed porch. Thatch roof continues from Tree Cottage over original (left) part of Well Cottage but C20 extension has lower gable-ended slate roof.

Interior of Tree Cottage has plain carpentry detail where exposed. Larger right room has unfinished cross beam and large rubble fireplace with roughly finished oak lintel and left side rebuilt with C19 brick with insertion of large oven. Roof not inspected. Interior of Well Cottage not inspected. Previously known as Gillets Tenements.
