2.

C13 origin. Square stone building, with buttresses. On ground floor, a doorway with 2 centred arch and continuous moulding heads to the undercroft, formerly the abbots wine cellar, which has one octagonal pier and single chamfered ribs in four bays.

The room above has a doorway with continuous moulding and two Decorated two-light windows. Triangular lobby with three doorways made when the room was divided into two in the C14. In the right hand chamber is a fine C13 fireplace, with a stiff leaf and other leaf capitals and projecting hood.

Tall chimney with rare top; the vents are three stepped lancets in a gable. Restored circa 1910. West of the checker is a lower stone range probably the former Granary, and then a timber framed gable on a stone base. Roof with two tiers of wind braces. The Checker Hall has been reformed out of a block of cottages, and is now a theatre with an apron stage, described under the Unicorn Theatre, Thames Street.
