GV II

House. C18 early C19 alterations. Whitewashed plastered cob, thatched wheat straw roof gabled at left end, brick chimney at left gable end, further brick chimney on ridge. Single depth 2 room plan with entrance into stair hall, small rear projection. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window front with porch. Reused C17 round- headed studded front door with high rail, cavetto moulded cover strips, and made to suit another reused timber doorframe. Ground floor windows 16-pane hornless sashes. First floor windows left and right similar sashes. First floor window above porch partly blocked to form a crucifix of barred panes, casement below centre of cross. Gabled timber porch made out of salvaged boards and C20 timber battened roof boards. The porch sides splayed out.

Interior. Ground floor left has chamfered axial beam with straight cut stops.

Ground floor room right has 2 roughly-hewn cross beams. C20 fireplace. Chamfered principals visible in upstairs rooms. Pieces of C17 panelling and remains of a leaded window built into stair well. C19 gabled roof over timber gate set between rubble stone front garden wall with stone toppers. Rough mounting block to right.

The cross-shaped window was designed by the Reverend R.S.Hawker, the poet, antiquary and vicar of Morwenstow, (q.v. parish church and vicarage), who is said to have spent his early married life in the house.
