Description

The wooden tympanum piece is thought to originally have formed a partition which was mounted above the rood screen and divided the nave and sanctuary. Based on the detailed costumes of the figures in the painting, it is suggested to date from the end of the 15th century. Following the Reformation, the panel was used in a ringers' gallery beneath the tower. Upon the removal of the gallery during the restoration of the church in the 1870s, the painting was discovered beneath layers of whitewash.
