Description

The Triangular Lodge was built in the 1590s by Sir Thomas Tresham as a warrener's lodge for the surrounding rabbit warren. It was intended as an architectural expression of Tresham's commitment to Roman Catholicism, and the building's design, which is based on the equilateral triangle, is symbolic of the Holy Trinity. The design also incorporates symbols of Mass, and the trefoil emblem relates to the Tresham family name. Tresham was the father of Francis Tresham, one of the conspirators in the Gunpowder Plot.
