The elephants are reputedly from the Paris Exhibition of 1862. One writer claims that they were placed in the church by an incumbent who preferred to address his sermons to the paper mache figures rather than to the congregation, as the elephant is a symbol of wisdom, "a quality notably lacking in his parishioners".
