Description

This misericord, one of four in St Mary's Church, dates from the 15th century; the bench stalls in the church date from the late 15th century. In Arthurian legend, Sir Ywain is a knight of the Round Table. A poem titled 'Ywain and Gawain' tells the story of Ywain and Gawain's marriage, and the feats of valour that Ywain must perform in order to win Gawain back after breaking a vow. In one scene, Ywain defeats a knight who flees to his castle. Ywain pursues the knight but is trapped beneath the portcullis of the castle, which crashes down upon him and kills his horse.
