St Edmund's Church was built mainly in the early 12th century, with additions and alterations in the 15th century. The wall painting of Thomas Becket in St Edmund's Church is one of the earliest paintings of him in existence, and shows him as a saint rather than the more common depiction of his martyrdom. It is located in the niche on the south side of the chancel. It was uncovered in 1860 and is in good condition apart from damage to the lower part. An altar, built in 1299, was originally also located in the chancel and was presumably dedicated to Thomas Becket.
