Collection: Drawings of Kit's Coty House and photograph of Roman sarcophagus in Westminster

Description

The collection contains a black and white photograph of an excavated Roman sarcophagus found in Westminster, London and a watercolour painting showing views of Kit's Coty House, Kent.

The photograph shows a freshly-excavated Roman sarcophagus of Valerius Amandinus with long inscription found when the green on the north side of Westminster Abbey was lowered.

The colour and wash drawings of Kit's Coty House are dated 1772 and signed 'J. Bayly. delin. 1772' . The drawings have the titles 'View of Kits-Coty-House' and 'North View of the Lower Monument, as it appeared Ao.1772'.

Archival History

The collection was acquired by the NMR in 2003.

There is a reference to Kit's Coty in an article by Paul Ashbee entitled 'The Medway megaliths in perspective' in volume CXI of 'Archaeologica Cantiana' published by Kent Archaeological Society in 1993.

There are references to the Roman sarcophagus on page 165 of volume III of 'An Inventory of the Historical Monuments of England in London' compiled by the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (England) in 1928; and in volume XXVII of 'The Archaeological Journal' published by the Royal Archaeological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland in 1870.
