Gosport High Street Heritage Action Zone

Gosport's maritime heritage and historic buildings can play a role in helping to re-energise the High Street for the benefit of the local community.

There's another Heritage Action Zone in Gosport: Gosport Heritage Action Zone

Gosport's High Street has a fabulous water-front location with a concentration of 18th and 19th century buildings that mirror historic connections with military and maritime trades and traditions. But sadly, vacancy rates are high and some beautiful historic buildings have seen better days. People go elsewhere to shop and for entertainment which is having a knock on effect on this High Street.

The High Street has potential to grow if it can be seen to have a different offer to the nearby Gunwharf Quays development, and if it capitalises on its wonderful heritage, and the leisure sailing market presented by the town's two marinas. Jobs are scarce and deprivation is an issue and boosting the local economy is important for the people who live here.

How the Gosport High Street Heritage Action Zone will help

The High Street Heritage Action Zone will see a drive to bring empty historic buildings back to life to provide housing, shops and community spaces. The scheme will also look to develop the cultural offering on the high street for the local community, for example, by looking at how the Gosport Museum and Art Gallery might be renovated.
