Warblington Castle, Warblington, Hampshire

This is a rare survival of a large Tudor courtyard house. It was surrounded by a moat. It was built for Margaret Pole (Countess of Salisbury), between 1514 and 1526. It was then virtually demolished at the end of the Civil War (1643). It is almost certainly built on the site of an earlier house. Records show that a licence to crenellate was granted to this site in c1340.
