The Spa, Scarborough, North Yorkshire

The spa at Scarborough dates back to the 1700s when a mineral spring was discovered. This helped make it a fashionable resort. The present Spa Pavilion however dates to 1858 and was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton (designer of the Crystal Palace, London). In 1877, a fire gutted the pavilion. It was restored and doubled in length between 1877 and 1880 by Verity and Hunt. The Spa was the most fashionable place of entertainment in Scarborough during the Victorian period and was visited by the Prince of Wales.
