The Garrison Gate, The Garrison, St Marys, Isles of Scilly

This is the main entrance through the curtain wall across the neck of the Hugh, later known as The Garrison. The gateway is known as The Garrison Gate. The wall and bastions across the neck of the Hugh were begun by Francis Godolphin soon after 1601. Later batteries (defences) and walls encircling the peninsula were added in 1716-46 by Abraham Tovey, Master Gunner. It was he who remodelled the gateway to be the one we see today.
