The Black Gate, Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear

The 'New Castle' at Newcastle upon Tyne was founded by the Normans to command a crossing of the River Tyne. The Keep was built in 1168-1178, while the Black Gate (a gateway into the barbican) dates from 1247.
