Reigate Castle Gateway, Reigate, Surrey

Reigate Castle was built in the 12th century. It had a keep, motte and bailey. None of the masonry survives. The Castle had started to fall into ruins by the 16th century. It was totally ruined by 1642. There were still some stones left in the 18th century. From these stones Richard Barnes built a Gothic style gateway in 1777. He dedicated it to the memory of William de Warrenne (who founded Reigate Priory).
