Prudhoe Castle, Prudhoe, Northumberland
This castle was built in the 12th century. It replaced an earlier timber motte and bailey castle on this site. In the 13th century the curtain wall was rebuilt and extended to include the keep within it. A barbican (tower) was added in the mid 14th century. It is built on a steep natural hill. It is defended by moats on the south and west sides only. In the early 19th century a gothic manor house was built within the ruins of the castle. This property is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
