These remains are part of the north wall of the middle bailey of Nottingham Castle. The Medieval castle consisted of 4 distinct baileys, the Upper, Middle, Outer and Northern. The wall was built in 1171-72, for Henry II. A tower known as the East tower (Black Tower) was added in 1250-1270, for Henry III. Then the West tower (King Richard's Tower) was added in 1460-1485, for Richard III. It is an important survival of 3 different phases of the medieval castle.
