Milestone, Leatherhead Road, Chessington, Greater London

This milestone is on the west side of the road beside the car park at Chessington Zoo. It probably dates from the late 18th century. It is set diagonally to the road with a triangular top and made from Portland stone. The top is inscribed: "ROYAL EXCHANGE 17 MILES/WHITEHALL 15¼ MILES/HYDE PARK 14 MILES/PARISH OF CHESSINGTON". The south east face is inscribed: "TO SURBITON/3 MILES/KINGSTON/4 MILES". The north east face is inscribed: "TO LEATHERHEAD/4 MILES/DORKING/9 MILES". Milestones date back to Roman times.
