Lime Kiln, Crag Road, Warton, Lancashire

This lime kiln was built in the 19th century. It is built into the hillside by a road. This presumably made it easier to bring in limestone and take out the finished lime. By lighting fires in these kilns and adding crushed limestone, lime was produced. It was used as fertilizer in the fields and also for whitewashing cottages.
