Leighton Construction Camp, Healey, North Yorkshire

Leighton Construction Camp was built at Breary Banks between 1908-11 for workers building Leighton reservoir for Leeds Corporation. It grew into a village. Buildings included a sewage works, electricity station, recreation room, mission room, school, hospital and stores. From September 1914 work was suspended. The land and buildings became a training camp for the Leeds Pals (Leeds City Battalion). They lived in tents and then huts were constructed. From 1917 the camp was a prisoner of war camp. It returned to use as a construction camp between 1919-21. The camp was abandoned in 1926 when all the work was completed. Only the outlines of buildings can be seen here.
