Gotten Manor, Gotten Lane, Chale, Isle of Wight

This house was built in the 17th century. It is built on an ancient manorial site recorded in the Domesday Book. There is a description of a building here in an inquest report on the death of William de Goditen of c.1305. In 1313 the owner of Gotten, Walter de Goditen was arraigned (charged in court) as a result of the shipwreck of "The Blessed Mary". It was carrying a cargo of white wine from Aquitane to England, which was then taken by local men. He was fined 287 1/2 marks for his part in the theft.
