Donnington Castle, Shaw cum Donnington, West Berkshire

This medieval castle was granted a license to crenellate in c1386. During the reign of Richard II. It has a rectangular shape with round angle towers and a rectangular gatehouse. The castle was later vigorously defended during the Civil War. It became a Royalist stronghold. They built a series of large defences around it. These survive today as earthworks, each averaging 1.7 metres high. This site is now in the care of English Heritage (2010).
