Church of St Mary and St Botolph, Thorney, Peterborough

This church includes the remains of Thorney Abbey. A monastery was founded here in c670. It was destroyed in a Danish raid of 870 and refounded in 972 for Benedictine monks. In c1085 the church was rebuilt by Abbot Guenther and completed in c1108. The abbey was dissolved in 1539. The 5 bays of the nave of this church are all that remain of the abbey. In 1638 the ruined church was restored as parish church.
