Archway from St Denys Priory, Southampton, Southampton

This archway is from St Denys Priory. It was rebuilt in the grounds of Tudor House Museum. The priory was founded in 1127 by Henry I. It was for Austin (Augustinian) Canons. The taxation of 1291 gives the total annual value of the priory as 13l 6s 8d. The convent was damaged in a French raid of 1338 and again in 1385. In 1465 Edward I confirmed all their charters. By 1535 the annual value as 80l 11s 6d and at the Dissolution in 1536 there were 9 canons and a prior.
