ST5873NE KING SQUARE, Kingsdown 901-1/5/1479 (North West side) 08/01/59 Nos.12-15 (Consecutive) and attached front railings and gates (Formerly Listed as: KING SQUARE (North West side) Nos.12-15 (Consecutive))

GV II

Terrace of 4 houses. c1772. Possibly by Thomas Paty. Brick with limestone dressings, brick party wall stacks, roof not visible. Double-depth plan. Mid Georgian style. Each of 3 storeys, basement and attic; 3-window range. 2 handed pairs with rusticated pilasters to a cornice and parapet, and C20 porches over outer doorways with segmental overlights and 6-panel doors; cambered heads with 5 stepped voussoirs and fluted keys to 6/6-pane horned sashes, and 2 slate, hipped dormers to the right-hand pair. The basements project, with steps up through them to the doorways. INTERIOR: Nos 14 & 15 now interconnected; No.15 has a fully-panelled front room with fluted Ionic pilasters flanking a fine fireplace with carved fruit, rocaille and an eared overmantel, a modillion cornice, fluted pilasters to a semicircular hall arch, leading to an open-well stair with 3 column-on-vase balusters to each stair, column newels and a ramped rail, panelled shutters and doors. Similar details observed to No.12. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: attached wrought-iron spiked railings and gates to the front steps and areas. King Square was laid out c1742 by George Tully.
