Volume: Roche Abbey, Maltby, Yorkshire

Description

203 sheets of drawings of Roche Abbey all made during the twentieth century (though with Ordnance Survey map sheets surveyed in the nineteenth century). Most relate to maintenance and repairs of the abbey buildings, including the Custodian's House (Abbey House) and the Gatehouse, and were produced by H. M. Office of Works, the Ministry of Works, the Department of the Environment and English Heritage.

The earliest sheets are second edition Ordnance Survey sheets from 1902 (surveyed in the nineeeneth century).

There are a number of sheets from the 1920s produced by H. M. Office of Works including site plans, drawings relating to reinforcement to vaults and wall tops, and sheets relating to the Custodian's House and Gatehouse.

From the 1930s there are drawings showing changes to water courses and proposals for flood prevention. From the 1950s to the early 1970s there are a number of sheets relating to alterations to the Custodians' House. Then, from 1978 to 1982 are a series of drawings made by the Department of the Environment showing proposals for the museum and ticket office in Abbey House.

Several drawings relate to cloister reconstruction in 1983 and transept arch repairs between 1991 and 1992.

There are groups of photogrammetric elevations from 1981, 1990 and 1993 and a topographic survey made between 1987 and 1988. Also from 1988 is a drawing relating to remedial work on the tunnel under the Abbot's lodgings.
