OLD COMPTON STREET TQ 2980 NE 1900/71/10007 No 68 II Town house, now shop and flat. c. 1729-40, refaced early in C19.
4 storeys over basement, 2 windows wide, C19 4-pane sashes to front elevation; 12 pane C18 sashes under cambered brick arches to rear elevation. Large rear stack shared with No 66. No closet wing or rear extension. Second floor has a solid wall to the front, and a mansard to the rear; probably originally a mansard, with the front altered early in the C19 (by 1840).
Interior: Two rooms deep, rear rooms with corner fireplaces.
Rooms on first and second floors and staircase compartment full panelled, with plain, recessed panelling; cupboards to sides of fireplaces in front rooms on first and second floors; early C19 fire surrounds in the first floor rooms; early C18 closed string stair, with turned balusters, moulded handrail, and columnar newel posts. A rare survival of the smaller West End house type of the early C18, probably built as part of widespread rebuilding of the Portland Estate in Soho, c. 1725-34.
