SJ3288NE KING'S SQUARE 789-1/14/93 Entrance to Mersey Tunnel 10/10/80 (Formerly Listed as: KING'S SQUARE Entrance to Mersey Road Tunnel)

GV II

Tunnel entrance. 1925-34. Engineered by Sir Basil Mott and J.A.Brodie, with Herbert J.Rowse as architect. Faced in white Portland stone. Egyptian style. Two flanking lodge towers, and walls leading downwards towards portals. Lodge towers have round-headed arched entrances flanked by fluted engaged shafts, and wing motifs in low relief over. Scalloped frieze and high blocking course above. Flanking walls link to retaining walls of tunnel entrance, with chevron frieze. Wing motif over portals. Original height of westernmost lodge tower reduced during alterations which have included additional building against the flanking wall and partially glazed infilling of formerly open ground floor of towers.
