Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

CHULMLEIGH NEW STREET (east side), SS 6814 - 6914 Chulmleigh 7/85 The Cot, including front courtyard wall GV II Small cottage. Probably C18. Painted rendered stone rubble and cob. Hipped thatch roof with plain ridge. Lateral stone rubble stack with brick shaft to left side.

Compact 1 room plan cottage built at right angles to the street with direct entry to front end into principal heated room with small scullery at rear to right of winder staircase. C20 single storey kitchen extension with lean-to roof, but incorporating cob wall to rear probably converted from outbuilding extends at right angles towards rear of left side.

Exterior: 2 storeys. Single 3 light casement 2 panes per light on each floor to front end, the ground floor window to left of C20 door.

Interior: raised and fielded dado panelling to rear wall of front room. Original fireplace intact but concealed by C20 grate. Otherwise C19 joinery entirely intact.

Roof: not accessible but feet of slender principals and hipped ends visible confirming a C18 date.

Included is the attached front cob courtyard wall with corrugated iron capping extending from front left side of cottage. The cot is a particularly interesting and unspoilt example of a small 1 1/2 room plan cottage surviving close to a market town centre.
