COLEBROOKE COLEFORD SS 70 SE 3/118 Tudor Cottage
GV II
House. Late C16-early C17. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone rubble stack topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.
L-shaped corner house. Main roof continuous with Wayside (q.v.) adjoining to west to east-facing gable end and short crossroof to Sunnybank (q.v.) adjoining to south. 2 rooms. The main room across full east facing front has rear lateral stack and front winder stair which projects slightly externally at left (south) end. Small unheated rear room. 2 storeys. Main east front has roughly central C19 4-panel front door with a late cl9-early C20 casement to right and another above. The projecting newel turret to left has a small later C17 oak stair window of 3 lights, the mullions with chamfered front edges only. The north-facing side wall contains 2 late cl9-early C20 casements, ground floor to left and first floor to right.
Interior is largely original. The main room has a chamfered and step stopped cross an with scratch-moulded joists, the mouldings different either side of the bean. The volcanic stone fireplace with its soffit-chamfered oak lintel and inserted brick oven with cast iron door has been reduced in size. The winder stair may be a replacement of tile original but is nonetheless to wall earlier. Tie division between the 2 rooms and both party walls are cob to wall top level with original tie beam closed trusses over; except west party wall (to Wayside) where ridge is simply carried on a post. Original common rafters and purlins survive.
The crosswing roof maybe slightly later than main roof. The original woven hazel twig infil o the southern party wall (to Sunnybank) is exposed in roofspace.
Coleford is a remarkably unspoilt and picturesque hamlet in which Tudor Cottage occupies an important visual position.
