TALATON SY 09 NE 6/187 Oak Tree Cottage - GV II

House. Late C18 - early C19. Plastered cob on stone rubble footings; stone rubble and brick stacks topped with C19 and C20 brick; thatch roof.

Plan: 4-room plan house facing south-west. Central entrance hall and axial stacks between the 2 rooms each side. The centre rooms are the main ones. 2 storeys with lean-to outshots to rear.

Exterior: irregular 5-window front. A couple of the first floor windows may be original and they contain rectangular panes of leaded glass. The rest are C20 casements with glazing bars. Central front doorway contains a C20 part-glazed plank door behind a contemporary tile-roofed porch on plain posts. Secondary front door at left end contains a plank door. Roof is hipped both ends and to right carries down over an outshot.

Interior: no carpentry detail is exposed on the ground floor and the fireplaces are brick with low segmental arches over. Roof not inspected.

Oak Tree cottage is one of an attractive group of listed buildings in the vicinity of the Church of St James (q.v).
