TALATON FAIRMILE SY 09 NE 6/180 The Mill (formerly listed as The Old Mill) 21.8.78 GV II
Converted mill. Probably C17 origins, largely rebuilt in the late C18 - early C19, converted to a dwelling in 1969 with some alteration. Most is late C18 - early C19 English bond brick but includes some later brick at the top and a section of limestone including ashlar blocks at first floor level (is this earlier?); slate roof.
Plan: the mill is built alongside the lane on a rough north-south axis. The entrance is in the north end. A 1-room plan block projects at right angles from the east side; presumably it was originally the wheel house. Main block is 3 storeys, the wing is 2 storeys.
Exterior: contains an irregular arrangement of C20 casements with glazing bars, some are obviously blocking loading hatches and the like. Roof is gable-ended.
Interior: not inspected but apparently no machinery remains.
