HARTFIELD BROOKSHILL LANE TQ 43 NE (west side), Holtye 5/10020 Old Marks II* (star)

House. Probably early C16 smoke-bay house with chimneystack inserted c1600 when the Parlour end appears to have been improved. A 4-bay building with integral outshut to rear (south) refronted in early C19 and extended with 2 projecting gables to north in late C19.

Timber-framed building, on sandstone base, refronted in red brick with grey headers to ground floor and first floor hung with tiles, some curved. Plain tiled roof with off central brick chimneystack. Two storeys and attics in gable end; 4 windows, mainly C19 casements.

Front elevation (north) has 2 projecting C19 end gables and plank door in moulded architrave. West front has first floor c1600 ovolo-moulded window 4x2 and projection formerly a chimneystack. C20 hipped porch with wooden supports. Rear (south) side has integral outshut with roof sloping to ground floor. Four C19 gabled dormers with bargeboards and pendants. Triple casements to ground floor and plank door. Attached to the east are a C19 brick scullery and outbuilding. Interior has to former Parlour (ground floor west) a chamfered spine beam and a most unusual chamfered post with 3 overhanging tiers of panels with lambs tongue stops. Central room has open fireplace with run out stop and opening for bread oven and spine beam with lambs tongue stops. East room has spine beam with 2 inch chamfer and lambs tongue stops. Early C19 winder staircase to rear of east room and C19 staircase in former smoke bay between west and central rooms. Principal bedroom over Parlour has ovolo-moulded window, exposed frame with midrail and gunstock jowled posts. Curved brace to outshot. Two panels of original combed pargetting in north wall. On the other side of the wall is a section of display bracing of quatrefoil patterns of c1600, originally the outside wall of the building before the late C19 gable was added. Framing of this type is typical of the north west but very rare in the south east. Central bedroom has wooden bressumer, probably concealing earlier fireplace, curved braces to internal partition and a series of vertical studs. End bedroom has jowled posts with runout stop and curved braces. Roof has queen posts, original rafters, through purlins, collar beam and curved tension braces. Former smoke-bay to east of end room has smoke-blackened timbers and chimney bay also has smoke blackening to some timbers. Lath and plaster partitions and old floorboards.
