CREWKERNE

ST4409 YEOVIL ROAD 876-1/7/174 (South side) Entrance gates, gate piers, walls and railings to Townsend Cemetery

II

Walls, gate piers, gates and railings. c1874. Limestone rubble, Ham Hill stone ashlar and cast-iron. A revetment wall encloses the garden of the lodge to the north and curves round to the gates at the west; this has recessed panels with Ham Hill stone plinth capping to plinth and top. To the right, extending approx 60m, is a castellated rubblestone boundary wall. For approx 55m, a low boundary wall with plinth capping, separates a footpath from the drive; it supports railings of 3 horizontal spiked rails, the lower ones set into the plinth, the upper rail has spikes above and below. The 4 substantial gate piers have steep, stepped pyramidal tops with crocketed finials, stiff-leaf cornices and stepped-back corners with inset colonnettes. The gates, single to the sides, double to the centre, have 5 horizonal bars, long/short railings to the base, a diagonal cross pattern to the centre and trefoil-type finials along the tops. Included for group value.
