Description

This information is taken from the statutory List as it was in 2001 and may not be up to date.

SU 08 NE PURTON HIGH STREET (south side) 8/322 Northview Hospital (north block) 25.8.83 II

Workhouse, now hospital. Commemorative plaque over central door reads 'Cricklade and Wootton Bassett Union: 1837'. Fine red brick with white joints, hipped low-pitched slate roof, no stacks.

Facade to street a formal composition in 2 storeys, with single set back wings with gable slated roofs. 3-4-3 bays with broad pediment to central four bays, plain stone string course, single brick eaves course, stone cornice and pediment course. All windows original sashes with glazing bars under fine rubbed brick flat arches, stooled stone sills; central wide 6-panel door up 2 stone steps, and heavy flat hood mould on simple brackets. Incised commemorative plaque above door, but pediment plain.

Interior has been substantially modified, but there is some original brick vaulting to cross corridors. A good example of low- cost C19 public enterprise presenting a seemly facade to the village street.
